Hands of Mercy (Outreach) Overview
In the fall of 2021, St. Josaphat reorganized our various service ministries (see sidebar) under the umbrella of Hands of Mercy. Our specific goal is to be the hands of Christ in our community by reaching out to those in need through the corporal works of mercy. Bring your great ideas to our Hands of Mercy coordinators. They know which of our ministries need more help, and where we can direct your good intentions. We're grateful for all of the wonderful volunteers involved with Hands of Mercy!
Our Mission
Hands of Mercy is our mission to provide compassionate support and assistance to the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized in Chicago, regardless of religious beliefs, race or nationality. Our specific goal is to be the hands of Christ in our community by reaching out to those in need through the corporal works of mercy:
- To feed the hungry
- To give water to the thirsty
- To shelter the homeless
- To visit the sick
- To visit the imprisoned, or ransom the captive
- To bury the dead
- To give alms to the poor
Benefits of Volunteering
With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer, however, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. Volunteering and helping others can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. And you'll probably make some new friends too! While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.
